Simbi Community Letter: 2025 Spring Equinox

Hello Simbians!

As the days grow longer and the first signs of spring emerge, we’re thrilled to share some exciting updates from Simbi! We know the state of the world is precarious and disheartening, but even in the face of the greatest challenges, we persevere on our mission of building community connection through mutual aid.

This Equinox marks the relaunch of our community letter, which will be published seasonally (quarterly) going forward. We have so much to tell you about the vibrant future we’re building together for the Simbi community!

First, we want to extend a warm welcome to two invaluable additions to our volunteer team: Sam and Anita! Their passion for Simbi and expertise in community-building and decentralized platforms will be instrumental as we embark on exciting new initiatives for this year, and beyond!

Together, Sam and Anita run hAppenings.community, a website and Substack newsletter focusing on Web3/decentralized projects built on the Holochain Framework. They found Simbi through our published intention to eventually move Simbi’s technical infrastructure to a fully decentralized system, a project which continues to gather steam, and we look forward to tackling with our volunteers and open source community allies in the near future!

Anita
Meet Anita!
We are delighted to introduce Anita Halcyon, former Executive Director of a time bank in Denver, Colorado, and an active Simbi volunteer. Anita is taking the volunteer lead on our Simbi Outreach Programs. A California native living a semi-retired life in the Pacific Northwest, she loves working on helping big visions become reality, and supporting people along the way! Her life has been about service in hospice work, timebanking, marketing, and as a social entrepreneur.
Sam
Say Hello to Sam!
Sam has a deep interest in cultural anthropology, history and coordination having studied History of Art and Archaeology at university. He has worked in various industries and organizations including; commercial libraries, consumer branding, sales, and law enforcement. The common thread that runs through them is the intention to support others, discovering and sharing connections, whilst challenging preconceptions and seeking clarity.

Revitalizing Local Connections: Simbi Chapters are becoming Simbi Local!

Although most of our decentralized community exchanges happen online, local connections and gatherings are vital for building true community, which lies at the heart of Simbi. We’re excited to announce our plans to revitalize the old Simbi Chapters and Chapter Captain programs this spring, reimagining them as Simbi Local! We’re moving forward with new “Local Stewards” instead of “captains” to lead these community-driven initiatives.

For the rest of the spring season, we’re reaching out to understand what worked well, what could be improved, and how Simbi can better support local efforts. If you participated in Simbi Local Chapters prior to 2018, we’d love to hear from you about your experience, and any interest you have in a revitalized Local program under Simbi’s current evolution as 501c3 nonprofit mutual aid community! Reply to this email, or look out for some specific outreach from Anita or another member of the volunteer team in the coming weeks and months!

Exciting Updates for Our Nonprofit Partners!

Also this spring, our program for Nonprofit orgs is getting some TLC! In 2025, we’re committed to better supporting the incredible work of nonprofits on the Simbi platform and recruiting even more to join our community. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of Simbi’s Nonprofit Support Program through future newsletters. It’s going to be an exciting year for Simbi and our nonprofit partners!

The Simbi.com web platform, and the non-speculative, trust-based currency that drives our  mutual aid economy, will always be free for individuals to use. 🤝

Still, there are some things we aren’t able to trade skills for, such as web hosting & other monthly expenses that can be seen on our Expenses page. As a nonprofit org, we are deeply appreciative of all ongoing financial support we receive from our member community, and please keep in mind, all donations are tax deductible!
