Campus of Hippos: “A small world”

The following story is written by Campus of Hippos, a member based in Salem, OR. Campus of Hippos loves school and is passionate about art, music, cross country, and physics. Her goal is to work with NASA or another space program to learn more about the universe we live in. On Simbi, she is known for her beautiful, handmade paper cranes and custom pony drawings.

Bartering was a concept that earlier this year I had no idea existed. I did not know that the art of trading was in fact also called bartering, and that people still did it today. I am too young to have a job and I was straining to come up with ideas for Christmas presents. How would I be able to get good, inexpensive, quality things?

I joined Simbi in July of 2016, after my stepmom had introduced me to it. I was so overjoyed to join and get awesome things. My main motivation to join was to get Christmas presents for my family, but I didn’t expect to enter a community of wonderful people. My drawing skills have increased so much since I joined, and I am so excited that people actually like my pony drawings! I never thought that people other than my friends and family would appreciate my art.

One of my favorite experiences so far was when I got my first request to make paper cranes. I made them so carefully, and was very happy when I had finished them. The next weekend my stepmother had told me some of her friends from Simbi were coming over. I had gotten another request for “Draw you as a pony” and was just starting on it.

When they came over I recognized one of them. It took me a while but I figured out that it was the first person that I had made cranes for.

I was so excited to find out that I was right, and I had a fun time meeting him. Another one of them had asked me for the pony drawing, and he was very impressed with my work. I had so much fun meeting them, and I enjoyed the experience. Who knew Simbi was such a small world? Ever since, I have been excited to meet even more people — even if it is online.

Being a teenager without social media, Simbi is as close as I can get (it is very social!). Even if I had social media and all the fancy things, Simbi would still be my favorite. The people are so wonderful, and the artwork is exceptional. I can’t wait to see where Simbi will go from here, but I’m sure it will be awesome. Everyone is so kind and understanding, I wouldn’t want to be included in any other group. Even though I have had miscommunications, I would not choose another site.

Simbi has taught me many things, for which I am grateful. My advice to a newcomer would to be understanding when you can’t get exactly what you want. These people try so hard to give you the best experience they can offer, and you should keep an open mind. This is not a community for greedy folk, and definitely not a place for people to get money.

I can’t wait for what Simbi will offer in the future, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
